Liam

Last weekend Liam was thirsty all the time, hungry and peeing every 20 minutes.  We knew something was not right.  At church he peed 3 times during his class and his teacher, who is a nurse practitioner, told us that we should get him in to a doctor as soon as possible. On Monday morning we took him to his pediatrician. His urine glucose level was at 1,000. It should be at zero. They immediately advised us to check him in at the ER at Primary Children's Hospital. We got there and they took a blood test and confirmed that he did have type 1 diabetes.  Not exactly a diagnoses a parent wants to hear.  They told us he would have to be admitted for 2 days of education, which would start on Tuesday.  After being in the ER for about  3 hours we finally made it up to the children's medical unit.  Liam was given his first dose of insulin and at around 5 he was finally able to eat.  Liam did really well at the hospital.  We got him in before he got super sick, and they took great care of him.  It was a long 3 days for us, but he loved it.  He got all kinds of toys and loved all the attention.  Kyle and I learned what we needed to and we were sent home Wednesday afternoon. We are still learning, and it takes us a while to count carbs, but Liam is such a champ.  He knows he can't eat anything without asking me first and that every time he eats he needs a shot.  He doesn't fight us about the shots and even likes to help us check his glucose levels. Liam is doing great and Kyle and I are adjusting as well.  It has been a bit emotional for the whole family, but we'll adjust and pretty soon it will just be normal for us.
